Why I want to change 1,000,000 people (Yep. 2019, I go all in)
Why I want to change 1,000,000 people (Yep. 2019, I go all in)Why I want to change 1,000,000 people (Yep. 2019, I go all in)Dont try to visualize the great mass audience. There is no such audience. ? William ZinsserI always write for the audience of one. The same happens when I speak at a conference or facilitate a workshop. I dont care how much people are in the audience. If I can help transform one person, my time was worth it?- ?my work meant something to one human being.Goals can be a distraction. I agree with Tim Denning that being obsessed with outcomes messes up the chances to do the work we love. So, why have a set a goal for 2019?Almost two years ago, I left my corporate job at age 50 to pursue my purpose. I wanted to help people and organizations thrive in change. I didnt set any goals or metrics but obsessively focused on becoming better and better.Ive been doing what I love and experimenting every single day. I made a lot of mistakes and discovered many things about myself and what I can do. Now that I have clarity, a challenging goal can become an accelerator rather than a distraction?- ?it will multiply my excitement, focus, and purpose.Heres my pledgeI am going to change one mio people in 2019?- ?to help them become the best version of themselves personally and professionally.Organizations and people want to transform and become better. Unfortunately, for most, the experience is dramatic and painful. But it doesnt have to be that way. Change should bring out the best within people, not their worst. When I hear back from people, I feel reenergized?- ?I want to give more. One young man wrote to tell me that one of my articles has given him hope?- ?he decided to give himself another chance rather than committing suicide.A woman who attended one of my workshops realized that by trying to be the nice one, she had continuously postponed her dreams. She decided to start taking care of herself.A successful executive has been suffering from a problematic rel ationship with his boss after a team offsite, he took the courage to finally address it?- ?his boss was clueless about his own behavior and decided to work together in improving their relationship.A CEO called me to fix a toxic culture, afterward, she realized her own behavior was encouraging and rewarding unhealthy conducts. It wasnt easy but she bit the bullet. These are just examples of how rewarding my work has become stories like these inspire me to do and give more. But I dont lose my perspective?- ?Im just a change instigator. Im the spark, not the fire. Change happens from within. Your improvement is only on you. I just provide inspiration, resources, insights, and my authentic self. Two years ago, I started my geschftliches miteinander out of a purpose. For 2019, I need an ambitious goal to keep me excited, focused, and challenged. One million seems like a lot.But those who know me understand that I thrive when I challenge myself.Every year, millions of people read my articles here in Medium, Psychology Today, Thrive Global, and more. I engage with many more people via my books, workshops, keynotes, etc.Its going to be hard, but not impossible. Breaking into Investment Research
Breaking into Investment ResearchBreaking into Investment ResearchLets take a look at the recent graduate position.Investment Research AssistantInvestment research assistants work with senior research analysts to help in developing investment recommendations to portfolio managers. Recent college graduates will spend, on average, 2 to 4 years in this role before returning to business school. However, some of the most successful assistants are often promoted directly to research associate (most of these fast-trackers will have completed their CFA while working as an assistant). The investment research assistant is responsible for helping to monitor the industry and changes within companies covered in the industry, and for updating financial models accordingly. Assistants collect data for industry data services, company conference calls and surveys. For instance, in the previous Apple Computer example, the assistant would be collecting data about consumer demand and input prices for s emiconductors. Additionally, the assistant provides support to the senior analyst in the construction of recommendation reports sent out to the portfolio managers. Specifically, the assistant updates charts and modifies numerical sections of the report. While some of the work is routine and the hours are long, assistants are sitting next to, and learning from, the intellectual capital of the firm. A good analyst will teach you the ropes, including the intangibles behind analyzing companies, financial valuation and industry knowledge. The role of investment research assistant requires a high level of quantitative knowledge. Primarily, a basic working knowledge of accounting, financial markets, financial analysis and statistics is needed for this position. Aside from a strong quantitative background, research assistants need to be detail oriented, analytical schwierigkeit solvers, diligent, and superior communicators. Generally, firms are looking for finance or accounting major s for these jobs, but engineers and science majors are also coveted for technology and health care related industries. How to Find Your Calling
How to Find Your Calling How to Find Your Calling Theres a difference between a career and a calling. A lucky few have aligned them with one another. When we areyoung, we have dreams and ambitions forour lives. However, we rarely get to follow this path to fruition. Practical concerns almost always get in the way, and we end up pigeonholed in careers entirely differentfrom what we expected.Part of the problem is many of us dont actually know what our calling is. We dont know what the perfect job would look like or what its title would be. How do you put your ambitions into words on a job application when you cant even explain them to yourself? The Million-Dollar QuestionOne way of determiningwhat you really want to be doing with your time is to imagine you have won a million dollars (or as much money as you would need to free yourself from your current commitments). Ask yourself After you have paid off mortgages and debts, enjoyed some luxury or travel, and ensured your family welche staken care of, what would you turn to next? How would you choose to spendyour time and energy for the next 10, 20, or 30 years? Would you want to open your own geschftliches miteinander? Would you campaign for a cause thats close to your heart? Would you write a book, become a ski instructor, tap into your creative talents?Whatever comes to mind will give you a good idea of where your passion lies. Write it down. What Makes You Flow?Another way to establish where your calling might be is to think about the activities you flow in. Flowing is when you are doing something so meaningful that it doesnt even feel like work. You are focused, galvanized, and productive. Thoughts and anxieties dissipate as you become absorbed in the task, operating in an optimum state of consciousness. You may perform your flow activity almost intuitively. It could be when you are solving a problem, coordinating resources, selling a product, or creating something new. See if you can identify the activities th at make you flow, and then write them down. You may not even realize what activities you flow in until you are next performing them(For me, its when Im cooking. I dont work from a recipe, easily lose track of time, and am extremely content pottering around the kitchen)Determine Your Fundamental ImpulsesNow that you have an inkling as to where your calling lies, drilldown to the fundamental drivers behind it all.Look at your lists of passions and flow activities and ask yourself why these things appeal to you. For example, why would you want to start your own business after winning the lottery? Is it because you thrive on total ownership? Is it because you have a brilliant idea you want to market to others? Is it because youd be happier making meaningful decisions? Work it out and write it down.As a case study, lets look at why I flow when cooking. Its not because I like to eat or save money by making meals from scratch. Its actually because I enjoy thinking of a new idea and transla ting it into a tangible result. Cooking is my catalyst for turning conceptsinto constructions. Writing also gives me the same gratification. Find the deeper meaning behind what makes you happy and take note of it.Repeat this process for all of your flow activities and lottery endeavors until you have a list of four or five fundamental characteristics of your calling. Think abouthow many of these characteristicsyou experience in your current role. Is it enough to make you content? Is it possible you could find something else that fulfills more or even all of your criterion? Now that you know what your primary desires are, researchopportunities that would allow you to realize them and to get paid while doing so.Speak to people in appealing roles and check that your perceptions are correct. Assess job specs with a clearer knowledge of your core drivers. Is there a different team in your company that would cater to your needs? Devise a plan to navigate toward it. There may even be ways your current role can be adapted to encompass more of what compels you. Or perhaps with the new year comes the time for career conversion.Have faith, take the leap, and live your calling.Lauren Lindsay is a recruiter, blogger, and millennial with a marketing degree from the triple-accredited Strathclyde Business School. 4 Bad Excuses for Not Taking Your Vacation Days - The Muse
4 Bad Excuses for Not Taking Your Vacation Days - The Muse4 Bad Excuses for Not Taking Your Vacation DaysHeres a non-negotiable fact We humans need rest from everything we do, including work. And while I strongly believe in taking short breaks during the workday, Im not talking about that. Im talking about actually using your paid time off. Gasp Of the employees in the U.S. who receive this benefit as part of their compensation package, over half dont take full advantage of it, often leaving unused PTO on the table at the end of the year.Because even though we know vacations are good for us, were often full of excuses as to why we rarely (or never) take one. Well, good news Im here to put an end to the following excuses today.1. You Feel Guilty LeavingLet me tell you something about vacation guilt. Most of the time, its a wasted emotion. Were meant to feel it when we actually do something wrong, like side-sweeping someones car and not telling them. (Yes, thats wrong.) Instead, we fee l this way whenever we think about leaving the office. Heres the thing Theres absolutely nothing wrong with using those days. Theyre yours. You have a right to them. In fact, by not using them, the average person donates $561 to their employer each year. Thats your moneyAnd thats why feeling badly about taking them is like feeling badly about eating the fries that come with the burger you ordered. Eat those dang fries. 2. Youre Saving Them Just in CaseI used to hoard my PTO just in case I needed it all near the end of the year. After all, you never know when someone will invite you on an all expenses paid trip, you know? Ill let you in on a secret, though. I ended up never using them. Each time I moved onto my next job, I left almost all of them behind. Sure, I got paid out once. But the other times? They were just gone.It makes sense to save them when you know of events youll need to use them for- holidays, weddings, binge watching the new season of Queer Eye. But if you have some left over, what are you saving those for?So, get out your calendar and abflug scheduling out any unused (and unspoken for) days. Make a plan for them. And sure, if you want to save a few for peace of mind, Ill allow it. 3. Theres Too Much WorkThe truth Either you have poor time management skills, or theres an unreasonable amount of work on your plate. Take a hard, objective look at yourself. Could it possibly the former? If yes, its time to get your act together and figure out how to be more productive. Not just for the sake of your vacation days, but also so you can be a badass employee. If its the latter reason, though, then you need to have a conversation with your manager. Everyone in your company should be able to take time off without everything falling to pieces. If your team cant do this, somethings wrong.(And if you need help having that conversation, this articles a good place to start.)4. Vacations Too ExpensiveI know- from transportation, to lodging, to meals, traveling can be expensive. But no one ever said you had to go away. You dont have to buy flights, pay for a hotel, and spend $25 on every meal. There are ways to make vacation cheaper, like going to places where you can stay with friends or taking shorter day trips.Theres also this lovely little thing called a staycation where you can sit on your front porch with a book all day. Or spend a ridiculous- but necessary- amount of time at Target. Or stay in your pajamas with your eyes glued to the TV (hint This is where that Queer Eye marathon comes in).Theres no rule that says your days off must be spent at an all-inclusive Caribbean resort. A break from work is a break from work, no matter where it is or what youre doing. And yes- you should be mindful about when youre asking for time off. Requesting to be our for a week starting tomorrow isnt very considerate, nor is taking time off smack dab in the middle of your departments busy time. But that doesnt mean you shouldnt take it at all.So, go o n. Figure out whatever it is you need to do to banish these excuses from your life and use those days. I feel fairly confident in saying that you wont regret it. (But if you do, it isnt my fault). Doing anything fun with your PTO this year? Let me know on Twitter

Julia Isbister - Medical Student, University of Sydney
Julia Isbister - Medical Student, University of Sydney Julia Isbister Medical Student, University of SydneyPosted October 13, 2011, by Helen Isbister Kids always have exciting ideas about what they want to be and I had all those as well, but I think I actually always imagined myself doing medicine in the end. Julia is in her second year of a postgraduate medical degree at the University of Sydney. She survived the grueling entrance exam and interview process and is now enjoying learning all about the human body while making the most of the social side of the curse. Why did you want to do medicine? My father was a vet and I watched him do consults, treat patients and talk to clients. I found it an interesting process to have someone come in with a aufgabe and then talk with them, look at their animal and try to solve the problem. Ive also always been interested in the human body and how it works. Did you always want to become a doctor then? Kids always have exciting ideas about wh at they want to be and I had all those as well, but I think I actually always imagined myself doing medicine in the end. Did you go straight into a medical course at university? No, I never wanted to do undergraduate medicine. I was too interested in other things as well, like languages and politics, so I decided to do an Arts degree. I got to do a bit of everything chemistry, philosophy, maths, economics, politics, and languages Spanish, Chinese and French. It didnt really lend itself to a smooth transition into medicine, but then again the people in my course now come from all sorts of fields. What are the options for people who want to do an undergraduate medical course? There are fewer universities offering undergraduate medicine now, but if you did want to go straight into medicine in first year you need to sit the UMAT (a problem solving, no knowledge required test) and attend an interview. Its a longer course with a different structure than the postgraduate course because the y start out with a bigger focus on basic sciences. Can you tell me about the exam you need to sit to get into postgraduate medicine? Its called the GAMSAT, which stands for Graduate Australian Medical School Admission Test. It is assumed that people sitting the GAMSAT have a knowledge of Year 12 physics and first-year university biology and chemistry. Its an interesting test because there are three sections with the science section weighing the most. Then you have to write two essays on social science questions like what is democracy? and crime and punishment. There is also an English comprehension section. How do you prepare for it? Some people sit it with no preparation, while others opt to study for a year in advance and others attend courses on how to answer the questions in the GAMSAT. I borrowed some notes from a friend who had sat it, did a couple of practice exams, and read some sample essays and English comprehension questions. What was the next step after the exam? You p ut in three preferences for universities and, depending on your GPA and GAMSAT result, one of them might offer you an interview. Sydney Uni had a new format of interview called the multiple mini interview where we spent a certain amount of time at eight stations answering different questions. They were all scenario-based questions on ethical and professional aspects of medicine. What is GPA? GPA stands for Grade Point Average, that is an indication of a students overall performance in their course. What advice do you have for someone sitting an interview? Its difficult to prepare because they are scenario based. A lot of people went to courses to practice, but a doctor gave me the advice to read up on medical ethics, professionalism and the basic principles of medicine. Things like why a patient should have autonomy, the role of the doctor and the patient-doctor relationship. What attributes are looked for in people wanting to become doctors? First and foremost, I think that being y our own individual is important dont just say what you think the examiners want to hear. I think they are looking for people who have a solid concept of what is ethical and for people who are well-rounded with interests beyond medicine. They are also looking for people who are deep thinkers and can communicate their ideas. What is the course like? I dont think you realise just how much work it is until you get into it. You can pass the exams and fulfill the requirements, but ultimately its about coming out a competent doctor. The course is pretty practical. From the outset you spend one day a week at a hospital with clinicians. We learn how to take patient histories, physically examine the patient, give injections and take blood pressure. What do you most enjoy about it? I really like learning about the human body and I also really like the communal side of the course the fact that we are part of a group and all working towards the same goal. And what do you least enjoy? I always feel like I never know enough. There is an infinite amount to learn and sometimes you cant understand one part until you understand the rest. Its not about being lazy, but it takes time for all the pieces to fit together and sometimes it can be frustrating. What are your future career goals? Ultimately I hope to become a competent doctor who can diagnose and treat illnesses and care for patients. I think it would be satisfying to become a rural GP where you binnensee your patients for many years and see them grow up. You are also servicing a community which really needs and values your skills. On the other side of it, I really do find some of the specialties interesting. When do you have an opportunity to narrow your career path? Some people know from day one that they want to be an orthopedic surgeon or a cardiologist, but all the way through the degree you have opportunities to focus on areas of interest. Actually choosing a specialty doesnt come until years in. What advice do you have for someone who thinks they might like to become a doctor? Firstly you need to understand that medicine is a life choice its not the kind of job you leave at 5 oclock in the evening and go home without a worry on your mind. Also, talk to people who are working in medicine and ask them about their experiences. Its a lot of hard work to get there, so its not something to do on a whim. There was a 2016 Amazon patent putting workers in cages
There was a 2016 Amazon kapitnskapitnspatent putting workers in cagesThere was a 2016 Amazon patent putting workers in cagesDepending on if you see a future of robot takeovers or friendly robot colleagues, the next 10, 20, 30 years of humans learning to working alongside machines can spark optimism or dread. There are bound to be insane ideas that should never see the light of day And in 2016, Amazon filed a patent that took human-machine cooperation to this kind of dark place.According to a patent recently highlighted by the Seattle Times, Amazon had an idea to put humans in cages, so that they could work in robot-only zones safely and efficiently. In the patent figure, you can see a metal cage-like enclosure on top of a robotic trolley that could transport the workers around a facility. In the patent summary, the technologys use is painted as a way to helpunnecessary downtime where no inventory-related tasks can be performed.Patent of worker cage not likely to actually happenMany p atent applications never see commercial use, and it appears that this patent is never going to be of them. Lindsay Campbell, an Amazon spokeswoman, told the Seattle Times that reaction to the patent use was misguided, and Dave Clark, who oversees operations at Amazon, went further and acknowledged it was not the best technology Sometimes even bad ideas get submitted for patents. This was never used and we have no plans for usage. But the human cage for the sake of machine efficiency gives insight into Amazons thinking about its priorities. In this patent vision of robot-human cooperation, humans are having their movement dictated by a company machine that is free to roam. The patent gets referenced in a recent case study on the artificial intelligence systems powering Amazon Echo by Kate Crawford and Vladan Joler. There, they write that the patent represents an extraordinary illustration of worker alienation, a stark moment in the relationship between humans and machine. Human labor p owering the wealth of companies comes at the expense of personal autonomy. If you want to get a glimpse into the future of artificial intelligence, look into the patents and visions around them. Dystopian futures are built upon the unevenly distributed dystopian regimes of the past and present, scattered through an array of production chains for modern technical devices, they warn.

The 9 Rules of Being an Adult at Work - The Muse
The 9 Rules of Being an Adult at Work - The MuseThe 9 Rules of Being an Adult at Work We all think we have it together at work. But then something happens- an annoying co-worker, a failed project, a company restructuring- that makes us, well, act a bit out of ur element. So, its important every once in a while to be reminded of what it means to be a responsible and mature adult in the office. Because otherwise, we could cost ourselves our reputation, a promotion, or even our jobs. Yes, these may sound basic, but take note- immature moves could change the way people perceive you, and determine whether you actually succeed in your career (or come out looking like an uncontrollable child).1. Show Up on TimeBe on time in the morning, to meetings, to presentations, to company all-hands, to off-sites- early if possible. And speaking of time, stay late when its needed or expected of you.2. Dress AppropriatelyYou know what this means in your office. 3. Do Whats AskedIt shouldnt have to be sai d, but Im going to anyways. Your boss gives you an assignment, or asks you to chip in on something, or wants you to attend a meeting. Do it and do it well- because they asked, and because not doing it (or doing it poorly) will only hurt you in the long run.4. Respect Your Co-workersBe kind, honest, and patient with them. Along those same lines, avoid gossip. Youll have to work with many different kinds of people in your career- and you never know when these colleagues will reappear in your life- so make sure youre cultivating good relationships with everyone you meet (even if its just a professional relationship).Along those same lines, respect your co-working space (and those dirty dishes).5. Keep Your Complaining QuietThere will be times when youll have to do work that you dont enjoy, feels tedious, or takes an excessive amount of your time and energy.Real adults take these moments in stride. They may not enjoy them, but they dont whine to anyone wholl listen- and they dont do it over and over again in public spaces. And as a result, they are the ones recognized for doing the grunt work (and are rewarded as such).6. Keep an Open MindYour career, for better or worse, will never be truly stagnant. People will change, your job will change, your company will change, your interests will change. So, be open to new possibilities, whether its a new assignment, a new networking opportunity, or a new person to get to know. Let people and things surprise you- and if they dont, be OK with moving on to something else.7. Be ResilientLike I said above, nothings truly certain- and thats a good thing Change, mishaps, failure, they all make you a stronger, wiser, more exciting person. When they happen, dont let them get you down. You can wallow for a bit (yes, even with a tub of ice cream), but then pick yourself up and keep trying. Adults know that they have to own their career to thrive in it, even if that means failing over and over again. Practice being resilient in everyth ing you do, and people will never doubt your maturity and potential.8. Practice Self-AwarenessKnow when youre frustrating others, when youre not pulling your weight, when youre wrong, when you can do better. If you dont, get feedback. And, when youre aware that youre doing something right, take note of it, too. Always be learning from yourself and keeping tabs on where you stand in your career. (This worksheet can help.)9. Get Comfortable With ConfrontationConflict and confrontation at work are inevitable. Youll have to face firing an employee, dealing with office drama, challenging your boss, being in-between two colleagues, among other difficult things.Rather than avoid these situations, be an adult and accept them. Learn how to give tough feedback (and receive it). This will only make you a more respected and confident leader. Its the toughest moments that are a true test of how far weve come since kindergarten. Follow these rules every day (or, at least, fruchtwein days) in the of fice, and youll prove youre the kind of adult people want to work with and for.
